A window seat for the nervous traveller

Most cats travel badly because they cannot see out. The Space Capsule Carrier answers that with a clear bubble dome and a transparent shell, so your pet can watch the world go by instead of listening to it through fabric. The hard outer shell holds its shape under a seat or on your back, and ventilation holes ring the body on three sides.

Side and top openings mean you can load a reluctant cat downward rather than pushing them forward, which is usually the difference between a calm departure and a wrestling match.

This is a single-size carrier. The shell measures 32 × 28 × 42 cm (12.6 × 11.0 × 16.5 in), giving a floor of roughly 32 × 28 cm and enough height for a cat to sit upright.

Why dogs get a lower figure than cats. It is not about strength — it is about shape. A cat of a given weight folds into a much smaller footprint than a dog of the same weight, which carries its length along the floor. A 5 kg dog needs more of the 32 cm floor than a 5 kg cat does.

Measure before you buy. Measure your pet from nose to the base of the tail while they are standing, and from floor to shoulder. If nose-to-tail is more than about 32 cm, or shoulder height more than about 35 cm, this carrier will be too tight.

Using it safely

  • Never leave your pet unattended in the carrier, and never leave it in a parked car or in direct sun. A clear shell heats quickly.
  • One pet at a time. The carrier is sized for a single animal.
  • Keep journeys short at first and build up. A pet that has never used a carrier should meet it at home, open, before it is ever carried.
  • Check that your pet can sit, stand and turn around before travelling.
  • This is a carrier, not a crash-tested restraint, and it is not claimed to be airline-approved — airline cabin rules vary by carrier and route, so check with your airline directly before flying.

Care

  • Wipe the shell and dome with a soft damp cloth. Avoid solvents, which can craze the polycarbonate.
  • Remove the felt pad for cleaning and dry it fully before replacing.
  • Check straps, zips and the dome seating before each journey.
