A round bed with a high, soft rim and a sunken middle. The point of the shape is the edge: cats and small dogs sleep curled, and they will nearly always choose somewhere they can rest their chin and feel something against their back. This bed is that, in 4 cm (1.6 in) of long-pile plush.

It is light enough to pick up with one hand and move to wherever the sun has landed, which in practice is what most people end up doing with it.

The details worth knowing

• 4 cm (1.6 in) long-pile plush over a loose polypropylene fibre filling. It is soft and springy when new and, like every fibre-filled bed, will settle with use.
• A raised rim the whole way round, so there is no open side. This is the part that does the work.
• No rigid frame. The bed squashes flat for storage and springs back, which is also why it travels well.
• Three colours — light grey, blush pink and avocado green — in a single tone throughout.

Sizing — read this part

This is the decision people get wrong, and a bed that is too small simply does not get used. The sizes below are the manufacturer's own recommendations by pet weight, given in both metric and imperial.

A typical adult domestic cat weighs around 4 to 5 kg (9 to 11 lb), which is the M. The S is smaller than most people picture — it suits kittens and small adults, not an average cat.

Two things worth adding. A cat that sleeps stretched out rather than curled will want a size up. And because the bed is filled rather than framed, the usable middle is noticeably smaller than the outer diameter — the rim takes up a good part of it. If you are between sizes, take the larger one.

The manufacturer notes that its size recommendations are for guidance and that slight variation between beds is normal with a loose fibre filling. We would rather repeat that than have you measure to the millimetre.

Materials, described honestly

It is a soft bed, not a supportive one. If you are looking for something for an arthritic or elderly animal that struggles to get up, a firm orthopaedic base is the better choice and we would rather say so.

Care

• Shake it out and vacuum the pile regularly; long plush holds loose hair.
• Spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let it dry fully before it goes back down.
• If you wash it, cool and gentle is the safe assumption, and dry it flat. Heat flattens long pile permanently.
• Do not tumble dry, bleach or iron.
• Fluff the rim by hand after washing or the shape will not come back on its own.
